Visual Feast: A Doorway in Ghent

Until the 13th century, Ghent was the biggest city in Europe after Paris – bigger than London or Cologne.  The stone carvings represent its role as a major industrial port.

  1. I found the Belgie’s cities to be the most tasteless in Europe. I think all that Congo money went to their heads. Yet, every now and then I’d come across some baroque work as you did and be awed. The stone carvers back then were true masters. I have sat and stared at cathedrals, wondering at every gargoyle and flyng buttress, thinking that human beings designed and constructed such beauty. Got to love that word…Flying Buttress !
